Santa Fe, NM June 10, 2004 -- Monroe Gallery of Photography, 112 Don Gaspar, is pleased to celebrate the June 14th centennial anniversary of Margaret Bourke-White's birth with the major retrospective exhibition "MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE AT 100". The exhibition continues through June 27.

Margaret Bourke-White was born on June 14th, 1904, in New York City. Choosing photography as a profession, she immediately began her dramatic career by experimenting with industrial subjects. By 1929, Bourke-White's reputation attracted the attention of the publisher Henry Luce, who engaged her as an associate editor for his FORTUNE magazine. In 1936, Bourke-White was hired as the first staff photographer for LIFE magazine. Her photograph of the Fort Peck dam appeared on the first issue's cover.

Margaret Bourke White was one of the most famous and most successful photographers of her time. She was a woman, doing a man's job, in a man's world, from the foundries of Cleveland to the battlefields in World War II. She fought a heroic 20-year battle with Parkinson's disease prior to her death in 1971, and was named as one of the 100 most influential women of twentieth century.

Featured in the exhibition are 65 rare and historically significant photographs from every aspect of Bourke-White's career. Also included are numerous vintage photographs the actual prints used for Fortune, LIFE, and Time magazine stories, with important archive information inscribed and stamped on the backside of each photograph
